Life is unpredictable. Anything can happen anywhere at any time. We should always have a plan B or backup for everything that might happen. It saves us in many ways. Same goes for having a First-aid kit. You never know when someone might get injured even from the smallest things; you may get a cut or start bleeding.

Every employee has the right to get the basic facilities by their companies. Having health care facilities is one of them. The Occupation Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), outlines the necessity of having a first-aid kit at workplaces. It provides a guideline on how to do so and recommends keeping a record of all the injuries or illness that has taken place. The type of workplace also matters for higher risk of injuries. One should always have the kit on hand.

What is a First-Aid Kit?

First-aid kit provides with the basic medical items for giving immediate help at the time of injury or accident. It can help to stop the bleeding or calm down the patient until proper medical help arrives.

Benefits of Having a First-Aid Kit

Following are listed some of the advantages of having the first-aid kit.

1. Safety For People You Care For

Having a first-aid kit will calm the affected person. It will give him a thought that something is being done to ease his pain and stress.

2. Help In Controlling Greater Damage

You never know what is happening to your body in injuries unless you are a medical person. Using the first-aid kit will reduce the chances of greater pain or injury. It might slow down the worsening process of the injury or infection.

4. Cost Effective

Sometimes the injury might not be too deep. If you have a first-aid kit, it will not cost you more. If not, then taking that affected person to the clinic and getting it all done might cost you more.

What Does A First-Aid Kit Should Contain?

It should have the following basic elements:

  • Antiseptic Wash
  • Cotton balls and cotton swabs
  • Thermometer

 Medical Care At The Workplace

It is important to provide medical support at every workplace, no matter how few or a large number of employees they have. Every workplace should have a first aid room with basic medical facilities. It is recommended to hire a medical professional at workplaces because business employees might not have good enough knowledge about dealing with injuries. By providing this facility at the workplace, it will give the employees a sense of safety and will feel that they care enough.

  • How Often Should First-Aid Kit Be Checked?

Injuries or accidents don’t happen every day. Sometimes it happens once in three months or even more. Even though if it occurs a few times, it is vital to keep a check on the first-aid kit. You need to have a checklist of all the necessary things of first aid kit. Check once in every two weeks that is there anything which is not present in the kit. Secondly, it is important to regularly check the expiry dates of all elements in the kit. If the product is expired, throw it away immediately and buy a new one. If anything is used, do keep it back again in the kit. Buy a new one.

  • First-Aid Training At The Workplace

If you do not have a medical professional at the workplace, you need someone to know about the basics of how to use the first-aid kit. Give your employees the basic training on using the medical kit. In this way, they can help each other in the time of need, and no one will panic.

When To Go To A Doctor?

You should not only rely on the medical kit. It provides an only basic and small level of medical help. You should take the affected person to the doctor in the following conditions:

  • If the bleeding does not stop.
  • When the cut is too deep, and stitches are required
  • When the pain gets unbearable
  • If there is a severe burn
  • If you get hit hard by something which was moving

How Many First-Aid Kits To Have In The Workplace?

The number of first-aid kits depends upon the number of employees you have at the workplace. To get the right amount of first-aid kits, we need to look at the following points:

1) The Number of Employees

The number of employees, the more first-aid kit will be needed.

2) The Number of Floors

Each floor should have a minimum of one first-aid kit. It will be better if each floor has two first-aid kits for backup.

3) The Type of Work Activities

If the business is of a low-risk and employees are less than 25, than you should have one small sized first-aid kit. If the employees are more than 25 up to 100, you should have a medium sized kit. If the employees are more than 100, you should have a full-size kit.

If the business is of a high-risk, then use a small size kit for every five If employees are from 5 to 25, then use a medium size kit and use a large kit for more than 25 employees.

Safety is the basic right of every individual. It is the responsibility of the company to ensure and provide their employees with basic needs of security and safety. No one should compromise on not having a first-aid kit. It is always better to have a backup than to have none.
